Correspondence, 1844-1848.

The letters to his wife give an excellent historical and personal account of the Mexican War. He related troop movements in great detail, gives accounts of battles, and concludes with the prospects of returning home via New Orleans. Also included are a few letters addressed to other military leaders.

Born near Champlain, New York, Curtis graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1831. He was stationed at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territories (present-day Oklahoma) before resigning from the Army in 1832. He moved to Ohio, where he worked as a civil engineer on the Muskingum River improvement projects and also became a lawyer in 1841.
